Nursing and Allied Health: Joining an Online Meeting

 

Students use a variety of search methods and everyone does not begin at the same level - or learn through the same modality.  Think about your learning style and how you best learn.  To effectively engage and complete a project, you probably use a combination of learning styles: auditory learner, visual learner, hands on practical application, taking notes or reading.

 

 

 

Most databases help you identify Peer Reviewed Literature to support your research project, thesis, systematic review or NP special project. If you are not familiar with the term P-I-C-O-T, take a few minutes and review the slides within the PICOT Libguide page.

Our goal is to show you how to apply the basic steps of planning, executing, focusing and filtering  a search around your topic.

Most people experience a learning curve when they are searching a database for the first time.  Regardless of your experience level or prior knowledge of online databases, you may encounter a learning curve.

 

 

• Some searchers use a PICOT chart to "plan" their search, adding both key tems and major MeSH Headings.
• Some searchers use MeSH terms to focus their search, combining search statements with Boolean Operators such as AND, OR, NOT.
• Other searchers fly by the seat of their pants, a more daring approach. When they retrieve thousands of unfocused results, they quickly realize there must be a better way.

You will be exposed to the basic search process; practicing and applying what you have learned is perhaps the most essential step.

• Show you how to plan, focus, execute, retrieve and filter a focused result set
• Show you by example how to retrieve and extract articles using the tools within the database

 

 

 

Joining with another type of device other than a mobile phone is encouraged.  Mobile (cell) phones distort the image layout and design, which means you will not be able to follow the presentation easily.  Nevertheless, if you have no IPAD, tablet, desktop or laptop, you may join in listen in mode only.  You may join by browser or you may download the Webex Mobile APP to your mobile device.

 

 

 

"Joining by Browser" is the easiest method of joining a Webex class --  if you have not previously installed the Webex App on your laptop or desktop.

• If you have allowed sufficient time, it is advisable to download and install the Webex app here. Please allow sufficient time to test your install; login to the meeting 10 minutes in advance of the start time.

 

Download Webex at the Apple App Store

 

• Look for the App Store icon in the Dock.
• If you don't see the icon in the Dock, choose Apple  menu > App Store from the menu at the top of your computer screen.
• Please allow sufficient time to test your install prior to your class.  Login to the meeting 10 minutes in advance of the start time.

• When you are in a Webex session, click on the chat icon in the lower right corner.
• Choose: moderator, peer or everyone.
• The "To:" field specifies who you would like to send a chat message to:
  - Choose "Everyone" to send a message to all participants in the meeting.
  - Choose just one participant's name to chat with them individually within the meeting.
